4 types of fragrances every woman should have in her collection

Does your perfume collection have a few stragglers at the back of the shelf who are more used to gathering dust than being spritzed on your pulse points? We thought so. Every woman has a perfume collection that could use some tweaking.

Whether it’s culling your perfume collection down or ensuring there’s some more variety for you and your schnoz, improvements could definitely be made. We’ve been thinking through the non-negotiables of a perfume collection. So if you’re starting from scratch, taking a minimalist approach or completely overhauling your perfume collection, make sure you (at least) have these four types of fragrances...
#1 The old reliable
This is your trusty daytime scent for everyday wear. We’re talking something that’s light, fresh and makes you happy. We’d suggest a cologne, Eau de Toilette or light Eau de Parfum. And because it’s a scent you’re going to be spritzing every single day, pick one that’s affordable.
Try the So…? Fragrances Superstar Eau de Toilette, Missguided Babe Dreams Eau de Parfum (80mL, $39.99, chemistwarehouse.com.au) and Tous Les Colognes Concentrates (100mL, $45, priceline.com.au).
#2 The “I’ve put in more effort today”
It’s still ideally daytime wear, but this scent is for if you have something a little out of the ordinary happening. Your nose gets used to the scents you wear all the time, so save this one for when you need a little somethin’ extra – maybe a date or a big presentation at work. You want it to be a confidence-booster but still not too overpowering. Depending on your taste, make it a little sweeter, juicier or woodier than ‘old reliable’.
We’d suggest Eau de Toilettes or Eau de Parfums. And because you reserve it for special-ish occasions, we say you can splash out a little more on this one. Try the L’Occitane Terre D’Lumiere Eau de Parfum, Kate Spade New York In Full Bloom Eau de Parfum (50mL, $114, kate spade new york boutiques & selected David Jones/Myer stores from August 28) or Chopard HAPPY Lemon Dulci Eau de Parfum (40mL, $105, davidjones.com.au).
#3 The emergency mini
Sweaty post-work gym sesh? Realised you smell halfway through the day? Obviously, attacking the body odour comes first, so freshen up and then put on more deodorant. But then you can pull out the mini emergency perfume you've got stashed in your bag or at your desk. And it’s less offensive to others (because you apply it directly to your pulse points) so we say pick any type of scent for your emergency mini! beautyheaven loves LUSH Sun Solid Perfume and Kiehl's Musk Essence Oil Portable.
#4 The evening number
The is the one you drop the dough on. It should be a tantalising Eau de Parfum or Parfum that makes you want to strut. It’s sexy, alluring and goes perfectly with a red lip. We’d suggest Elizabeth & James Black Nirvana Eau de Parfum (50mL, $125, myer.com.au) or Opium Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent.
Obviously, this is a guide, beauties! And as always, you should go with your gut when it comes to perfume. (So if you want to rock that 'evening number' for everyday wear, you rock it!)

This sounds like a good approach. I tend to be very random and impulsive in my fragrance purchases!

Number one: Alien (Thierry Mugler). Two: Black Opium Intense (YSL). Three: Lost Cherry (Tom Ford). TF is third because of price. Longevity and sillage though No1

I haven’t got or tried any of these perfumes. YSL Opium reminds me of my mum. She used to wear it years ago. It is a lovely scent but it’s not for me. My favourite perfume is Chloe.

I used to use Opium by YSL but find it quite strong or heavy for the Australian warm & humid climate, perhaps would be less overpowering in the cooler months like now

I agree but the men's version is just sublime!

I dunno, I don’t think this strategy would work for everyone. I tend to wear my fragrances seasonally rather than solely based on occasion. I do however have scents I prefer for day, night or work within each season.

I live for perfumes lol...I have too many to name including niche and experimental brands :) my current top six (inspired by the style of this article) are:
Mon Jasmin' Noir by Bvlgari - lasts forever and projects no matter how long it's been on. Great date night scent! I think it's the more grown up version of Alien by Thierry Mugler.
So by Coty - great everyday floral bomb that I've been wearing for 20 years now. Good staying power. Great to layer with Curious by Britney Spears for a more aquatic floral.
Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker - amazing longetivity and projection. Stays on clothes forever and is a great dupe for a much more expensive perfume on the market ;)
Si by Armani. Explanation not needed for obvious reasons (ie it's, in my opinion, one of the best perfumes ever created).
Coromandel by Chanel. Only when I feel like a million dollars and want to smell like it.
Nebras by Al Rehab. It's everything I wanted Flowerbomb to be and is my current Springtime go-to scent. It smells like Heaven on it's own but layers beautifully with Marshmallow by MOR.
