8 tricks for perfect eyeshadow, every time

Along with looking fabulous in your make-up drawer, eyeshadow palettes are versatile, and can be used to create a whole bunch of stunning eye looks. The tough part is nailing the application. So if you find your colours never look quite right or your smoky eye generally ends up as a smudged mess, here are a few tricks that will seriously help you out. You’re welcome!
#1 To make your eyeshadow colour more vibrant, apply a white liner over your entire eyelid first.

#2 Use sticky tape for a defined edge (and leave it on to apply eyeliner, too).

#3 Choose darker colours for the outside of your eye and lighter colours on the inside to make your peepers look bigger.

#4 Make your eye colour really pop by opting for complementary shades.
#5 Apply highlighter (or a white eyeshadow) on the inner corner of the eyes to make them look brighter and more awake.

#6 Use more grey/silver shadow than black for a less hazardous smoky eye.

#7 Blending your colours is key. Use a blending brush to sweep between your coloured shadows for a seamless transition.

#8 Don’t extend colour beyond the eye crease. Rest your brush on the top of your eyelid and don’t take it any higher.

Blending is key. I don't agree with not extending colour beyond the crease though.

Yes! Thank you! I have hooded eyes, so the only way to contour my crease is to extend the colour beyond the crease... But even in non hooded eyes it looks good, it's just more dramatic, so depends what look you're going for

I have just started using eyeshadow again after a long break. I prefer a soft subtle look.
Thanks Stresseduser for the tip concerning makeup for hooded eyes.

I like eye shadow but I don't like to overdo it. I use a white eyeliner on my waterline and inner eyes to open them up, and use a soft purple or lilac on my top lids to enhance by green eyes.

To me, the most important feature is to end up with a result you personally feel comfortable with.

My niece gets married in 5 weeks time, so I've got that much practice time to master eyeliner for the big day. I'll be trying the sticky tape trick. I enjoyed this article, Thanks, Beautyheaven!

Everything I've researched says that for hooded eyes you bring the colour above the crease otherwise you don't see it. I follow Stephanie Lange on YouTube as she has hooded eyes and does videos on this.

I don't mind pulling the colour beyond the crease... if you're going for big and bold!
