This hack will take your highlighter to the next level

Instagram is chock-full of killer makeup hacks. From flare highlighting, to handy eyeliner tricks, Insta always delivers the goods. Now, a 17-year-old Aussie with 76,000 Instagram followers has shared a simple hack for blinding highlight that may just be the best one yet.

If you scroll through Arielle Stenner’s Instagram (@ariellxe), you’ll find bright wigs, bold colour, flawless eye makeup and some seriously shimmery highlighter.

How does she do it? Compared to other makeup hacks, this concept is startlingly simple: primer. It makes sense. We prime our face before foundation, our eyelids before eyeshadow and our lips before lipstick, so why not prime the high points of our face before highlighting? Well, technically there aren’t primers for that. BUT, Arielle has found that Bio-Oil works like a primer for her highlighter. And judging from her selfies, this trick is going down a treat!
If you don't have Bio-Oil in the cupboard at home, you can still give this highlighter hack a whirl with similar oils. beautyheaven loves Sukin BioNatural Skin Oil, Swisse Macadamia and Chamomile Face Oil and RosehipPLUS® Rosehip Oil.

“Apply Bio-Oil on the place where you are going to highlight and it turns your highlight into a damn sunbeam,” Arielle posted on Instagram. “Apply a tiny layer of it where you put your highlight then brush your highlight over the spot and BAM that’s how I do it,” she wrote.

In the comments of her Instagram pic, some followers speculated about whether the oil would disturb foundation. But Arielle jumped in with a promising reply. “I haven’t had any problems with it! But it could [differ] depending on the type of foundation your wear, I guess.”
For a glow like Arielle’s, we're willing to give it a go!

A tad bit too much highlighter for my liking.

Hhhmmmm... this looks just awful. I’m all for subtle highlighter on the high points of the face but this is just way too much! Clownish.

It looks nice on her, but I don't think this look would suit me.

Blinding and highlighter aren't actually two words I need together for my makeup.

I would be concerned that it would ruin the foundation too!

I usually just dab a little petroleum jelly on the parts of my face I want to highlight, looks super natural and keeps the skin hydrated at the same time.
I might try this the next time I do my makeup properly though because it looks beautiful on her!

Omg so atm I apply Mac Fix+ over the top of my highlight for this look. Priming before the highlight then highlight before applying the spray is something I am definitely going to try tomorrow morning.

If i'm going out clubbing, I want to be GLOWING. That way when I turn into a sweaty spaghetti on the dance floor people just think it's highlighter.

Super cute! I prefer sticking to the ol' setting spray trick though.

I'm with you, makeupcat. Fix + on the old makeup brush for my highlight on eyeshadow. I've never wanted to 'sunbeam' my highlighter, however. I don't really want to blind anyone. I'll do that with personality and sharp retorts as required.

Interesting idea, but not sure it would last beyond a photo.

I was not just thinking of lasting beyond a photo but rather only looking good for a photo.

It just makes their skin look oily.

I was thinking that myself, think I prefer the more traditional forms of hi lighters.
