Five steps to stronger, healthier nails

If you’d describe your nails as weak, soft, brittle and always tearing, it’s highly likely your digits need some attention. A lot of attention, in fact. From handy product picks to easy lifestyle changes, these five steps to stronger nails will see you showing off your long, healthy talons in just a few weeks…
STEP #1: STOP BITING YOUR NAILS
I said, stop biting them! Not only is nail biting an ugly habit to watch, but it also does an outrageous amount of damage to your digits. Firstly, it hinders the growth of your nails. Secondly, it greatly increases your chance of spreading infections from your mouth onto your nail bed. Thirdly, it creates a weak nail tip; one that is more likely to peel and break as a result. So, if your talons need a good trimming or you’ve got a hangnail, reach for a nail clipper instead. No bites! Oops, I mean no buts!
STEP #2: UP YOUR CALCIUM, IRON, PROTEIN AND ZINC INTAKE
Think of your nails like you do your hair – they are both composed of keratin, you see, and need a whole lot of nutrients to stay healthy as a result. If you’re after strong, long digits, you need to reach for targeted supplements daily or add foods like milk, eggs, broccoli and red meat to your diet.
STEP #3: PUT DOWN THE ACETONE-FILLED NAIL POLISH REMOVER
It doesn’t matter if you love nude hues or bright hues, if you’re a regular nail painter, you’re bound to be a regular user of polish remover. Make sure you’re not doing your talons any injustice by opting for an acetone-free product. It may not be as speedy as the jam-packed acetone versions, but your patience will be rewarded with hydrated, healthy and happy nails. Try: Revitanail Nail Polish Remover.
STEP #4: NEVER DO THE GARDENING EVER AGAIN
Or the dishes. Both activities do vicious things to your nails, you see. But if you can’t avoid these errands (or maybe you enjoy them!), always pop on a pair of gloves before tackling the task. By doing so, you’ll prevent germs infecting your nail beds and objects breaking or tearing your nails, as well as stop harsh detergents from drying them out.
STEP #5: EMPLOY A HARD-WORKING NAIL TREATMENT
There are many reasons your digits may be weak, brittle or dry (read: genetics, lifestyle, bad habits or lack of nail care) but there is one thing you can do to leave them super-strong and more resistant to damage: apply a nail strengthener. We love Revitanail Nail Strengthener. It contains both diamond and pearl extract to fortify your digits, and when used according to the suggested nail program, it eliminates peeling, flaking, chipping and breakage. This means your nails won’t appear to grow as slow, too. Winner! For faster, better results, use a nourishing cuticle oil as well. We’re fans of Revitanail Nourishing Oil because of its blend of hard-working herbal extracts, multi-vitamins and nourishing oils.
FANCY NAIL FACT: Never cut your cuticles. This will make them grow back thicker and drier than before.
Do you have dry, weak, brittle nails? Do you have any other tips, tricks or steps to take to improve your nails? And have you ever tried the Revitanail Nail Strengthener?

I like the idea of never doing the dishes again, might have to use this as an excuse to get out of washing the dishes (although doubt it will work)

One and the most important tip forgotten: the diet! Whole food loaded with fruit and veg, some nut/seeds. That is it!

It's an old wives tale but a good one...the next time you are cooking with garlic peel and cut in half an extra clove. Take half of a clove and rub it all over each nail especially the cutical area. Allow it to absorb completely into your nail. Now use the other half for your other hand. I was doing this regularly for a few weeks and still do but I noticed a change for the better and my nails became stronger and much whiter. I can't remember how it worked but it was doing something good so maybe someone knows that info and can share that for everyone else.

My nails have been breaking and peeling lately so I have been using Sally Hansen Maximum Growth which is helping a lot - but in the past I have also found the Scheussler Tissue Salts really transformed the health of my nails and gave me the best results as far as nail health goes.. I was a bit skepitcal about a homeopathic remedy but whatever is in it (Silica I think) it really works!

Haha I'd love to be able to stop doing the dishes and chores around the house and tell my partner they will damage my nails. Wonder how he'll react :p

My nails do get a beating with all the gardening I do, even with gloves on. The worst thing I have ever, ever done was cutting my cuticles. Why didn't I listen to those wise ones who tell you not to? Now they are always dry and build up fast :(

I've only just started taking care of my nails ; trying to get longer nail beds and healthier nails. I've been following most of these tips and am loving how fantastic my claw are looking! ;) thinking of taking before and after shots for myself. Also cannot believe how much of a difference just wearing gloves makes! Thanks BH

Great tips BH. When I look after my nails they are fine. When I get abit lazy, my nails suffer for it.
