This toast test proves why using a heat protectant is super important
There are many pieces of beauty advice out there that one may read and think "what a load of crap".
Honestly, aside from using an SPF every day, there aren't that many tips we treat as 'would be upset if we skipped it' musts. And although we know using a heat protectant on the hair before heat styling is a good thing, we didn't realise just how much of a difference it truly makes... until now.
UK-based hair stylist Patrick Wilson has shared an eye-opening video, in which he sprays a piece of toast with ghd bodyguard, the UK version of the ghd unplugged heat protect spray. Using a paper towel to create two halves — one that's sprayed and one that isn't — he then pops it in the toaster to cook.
The result? The sprayed half is barely any different, while the unprotected side has been subtantially toasted. Not only that, but the flip side of the bread( which had no contact will the spray at all) is even more cooked through.
So if, like us, you were doubting whether heat protect products actually do anything, this video proves they 100 per cent are.
Consider us converted, Patrick.
bh's most-reviewed heat protection products:
John Frieda Frizz-Ease® 3-Day Straight™ Semi-Permanent Styling Spray
"The John Frieda 3 Days straight styling spray does exactly what it claims. It doubles as a heat protectant and keeps my hair smooth and straight for up to 3 days or until I next wash my hair. I do not currently have keratin treated hair but imagine the effects of this would be very similar to a keratin treatment, when I go over my hair with a straightener." - PoshBec
Kérastase Paris Nectar Thermique
"This product is great for my long, dry hair! I use it before blow-drying and it makes my hair soft and smooth. You only need a tiny amount of the product because it's so easy to work through your hair. It's an expensive product but it will last for ages since you use so little, I would definitely recommend it." -Michelle737
"This product doesn't make my hair weighed down or sticky, but it is important to ensure an even spray. I usually spray it into my hands and work it through. I can notice the protection this product offers as the ends of my hair don't feel dry anymore from hair straighteners." - Khajiit

I'm a bit slack about styling my hair, I usually air dry and go but when I have straightened my hair I find that some heat protectants leave my hair feeling brittle and not soft but I have tried the DeLorenzo Fire Extinguish Thermal spray which is quite good.

I don't heat style my hair very often but most protectants contain ingredients I don't like to use.

I always use a heat protectant. I usually buy De Lorenzo Defence Extinguish Thermal Spray. I buy it from Hairhouse Warehouse. I’ve been buying this one for a while now and I really like it.

I do believe that heat protection helps hair so, so much but that video is fake, if you spray water on a piece of bread then toast it you see that it has the same result nothing to do with how well heat spray works on your hair!

I'm not sure that bread and hair are chemically similar enough for this to be a useful comparison.

A heat protectant is a must, although I rarely use heat on my hair.

I rarely blow dry my hair (not unless I absolutely have to), but when I do I use a heat protectant. I've yet to find one that my hair truly loves though.

but hair are dead cells from your body? What's the point of it?

That is the whole point of protecting it. It isn't alive so it cannot be repaired after it is damaged, once it is damaged it will have split ends and be brittle, frizzy and prone to breakage. Protecting it from heat ensures you don't need to lop it all off especially if you want to grow it long.

I swear by heat protection. I was using a cheaper one but switched to the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer and it's a game changer! Won't use anything else now
