How can I get rid of these frustrating dry patches on my face?
So up until recently, I had a pretty poor skincare routine - I simply rinsed my face in the shower and applied moisturiser whenever I remembered (every day - every second day). I decided I should do better, so for the past week and a half I have been cleansing nightly, exfoliating every three days, toning occasionally (sort of) and moisturising morning and night. I have been trying to go for products that are designed for my really dry skin. So;
- Sukin Rosehip Cream Cleanser (every night)
- Sukin Revitalising Facial Scrub (every 3ish days)
- Sukin Certified Rosehip Oil combined with Sukin Rosehip Hydrating Day Cream (I do the cream every morning and night, and oil just at night)
- Sukin Natural Hydrating Rose Toner Mist (maybe one spritz a day).
When I finish with my routine in the evening, I'm really happy with how my skin feels (especially on exfoliating nights) - but by the morning, I have these dry patches on my skin! They're a little flaky though not super visually noticeable (other than me in the mirror, the only person that gets close enough to my face to see them is my partner). It's more how rough those patches feel when I touch my face. They are most prominent on my forehead between my eyebrows and in a couple of areas on my cheeks. Once they're in full swing, the only thing that seems to minimize them is exfoliating, but I'm conscious of not wanting to do that too regularly.
I also sometimes apply Natio Soothing Face Cream (I think it's called?) nd their Dry Skin Ointment during the day to try and help get some moisture in. Again, everything seems to be such a temporary 'fix' until I shower or until the next morning.
How can I rid of these dry, rough patches for good? I'm very frustrated because I can't imagine what else I can possibly do. Any advice would be so very much appreciated. Thankyou!! :)

I was excited to be chosen to review these tablets and pleased that Natures Way provided enough for me to trial for a couple of months so I could truly ascertain if they were going to be beneficial
Glowy and beautiful!
A great and affordable sunscreen which has a glowy colour in it.
Such a beautiful foundation
This foundation is the best of the best. I dragged my feet in getting to try it because sometimes products aren't always as great as people rave that they are. This product genuinely is.

Random question just to get a better idea of the problem - you mentioned you didn't really used to have a skincare routine; before you started getting into a product routine, did you have these dry patches specifically as well? Or did they start showing up after you started a routine?
Every skin has unique needs so it is possible that you skin just doesn't like too much product!
Hi NellAdams - sorry, that's something I should have mentioned! I used to always get dry patches on my nose and sides of my nose (and these would be really flaky). I would also get flaky spots around my eyebrows. I put this down to not only having dry skin naturally, but also having a pretty poor skin routine.
My new routine has definitely helped with the dry skin on my nose and around my nose - this has been minimised greatly! However, the couple of dry patches on my cheeks and on my forehead are new.
In conclusion I guess, my routine is helping some areas of my face but also creating new problem areas which I'm finding both frustrating and confusing.
Hi hun I saw your post about dry skin patches. Recently I bought the most magical facial oil. It’s calked glory oil by eco tan and it’s amazing. I’m not exaggerating one bit. I had the worst dry elbow with red patches and scratches and after one application it was so much better and by three applications it’s totally soft and normal. I recommend you look at the reviews and look at the pictures attached to these reviews. Do some research and you’ll see it really is amazing. I just know it will help you. I tried to add a before and after of my elbow but it won’t let me upload 2 pictures. Good luck babe.
Tried to add the photo of it healed but it won’t let me. So sorry.
Try an intensive balm for dryness as I get dry lips and cracked mouth corners too now and then . Redwin Coconut balm , Lanolips dry salve, Burts bees should have one etc.. go for the natural ones.
Thanks for the tip! I also have a Lanolips balm that I use and I find that this is another product that sort of helps, but doesn't stop the dry patches from resurfacing.
Do you get them anywhere else on your body? psoriasis ? eczema ? just putting some ideas out their......
Avene make a lovely cream called 'calcifate' that my husband puts on his dry patches that show up now and again.
I don't! The only thing worse than the skin routine for my face has been the skin routine (or lack of) for the rest of my body. I wash myself with soap in the shower and occasionally I used a sorbolene cream all over. I don't have any sort of skin problem anywhere else on my body, just these dry, flaky patches on my face.
I used to get dry patches on my skin mainly above my lip and on my cheeks. The product that works best for me is Nivea Daily Essentials 24H Moisture Boost + Nourish for dry skin. It really done wonders for the dry patches on my face and it's a product I continue to use especially during winter. I also use the Sukin rosehip oil at night. I've used the sukin cleanser but I found it too drying for my skin and I prefer to use a cream cleanser. I also suggest you continue to use the scrub but only a couple times a week.
Regarding the cleanser, is it the Sukin cream one that you use? If so, what are your thoughts? I find it quite hydrating immediately after rinsing, but then a little dry - wondering if that could be contributing. I'll definitely look into that Nivea cream you've suggested, thanks!
I have tried the Sukin cream cleanser but I feel that it makes my skin feel dry and tight shortly after using it. At the moment I use Modelco cream cleanser. I'm not sure if the cleanser could be contributing to the dry patches on your face but it's probably not helping if your skin feels dry. I think it's worth trying a moisturising day cream and night cream that's suited for dry skin.
Thanks for your thoughts regarding the cream cleanser, perhaps I need to give another brand a go. As for the moisturiser, the day one I use from Sukin is supposedly designed for dry skin. I admittedly use this at night too rather than a night cream, but can't help but feel the rosehip oil is doing more of the work. On another night, my GP yesterday said I have a small patch of rosacea on my cheek which I'm treating now with an anti-inflammatory cream. Although my other dry patches aren't at all red, I wonder if rosacea might also help explain some of said dry patches. Anywho, thanks for your thoughts!
I've tried a few days creams that are designed for dry skin but the Nivea one is the only one that got rid of the dry patches on my skin and continues to keep my skin moisturised. It's a product I keep going back to. Hopefully the anti-inflammatory cream helps but if you still have dry patches that isn't rosacea I do recommend trying the Nivea Daily Essentials 24H Moisture Boost (the pink and white tub). Look out for it when it's half price as that's when I usually buy it. It will come down to $6.50 which I think is worth spending to see if it works. Good luck
Fantastic, thankyou! Do you use just the day cream or the night cream as well?
At the moment I don't use the Nivea night cream. I use products from different brands as I like trying new products but if something really works on my skin then I stick with it. I do use the Sukin rosehip oil in the evening and L'Oreal night cream.
I can understand that. You've talked up the Nivea cream so much that if I can get them on sale, I think I'll give the night cream a try too. Thanks for all the advice Vi!
I know I've talked it up so much. Hopefully it works for you as much as it works for me as I know it's frustrating to have flaky, dry patches on your face.
I love the Sukin Cream cleanser and toner but found some of their other products a bit drying. I'm with Vi on the Nivea, a rich cream great for dry, flaky skin and also try the vitamin E moisturisers from The Body Shop (if you're not acne prone). RosehipPLUS is another option if you like rosehip based skincare. Maybe research a good serum to try under your moisturiser too.
Interesting that you say that. I've used their Rose toner mist a few times and I can't help but feel it dries out my skin so I tend to only really use it as a makeup setting spray now. I'm definitely going to give that Nivea cream a go. I might also try some Vitamin E cream as well like you've suggested - I came really close to buying some the other day from Natio.
Yes it's got great ingredients in it but it is better as a spritzer/facial mist.
If you're considering Natio, give the Ageless toner a go! I've been using it for a few years! Sometimes I don't feel like I need to apply moisturiser straight away after using it as it's so hydrating.
Thanks for the tip. Natio had a warehouse sale last weekend - sounds like I should have stocked up a bit more!
Sounds like you have overall very dry skin. I suggest changing to a different face cream. Do try out a few at the chemist. I find that a lot of brands that claim to be suitable for dry skin type are actually not moisturising enough for me.
Departmental store brands that work well for me includes clarins, Clinique, Estee Lauder. Loreal Revitalise line have some good ones too. I even use night cream as day cream as they are richer than day cream.
Always, always wear sunscreen.
Once you found a suitable face cream, then as per others have suggested, pot treatment regularly during the day with ointment (e.g. Lucas pawpaw)
I'd definitely say I have very dry skin. I find that the face creams I've been trying for dry skin are nice for the majority of my face, but just don't seem to tackle the extra dry patches very well.
In the past, I have used a Kiehl's face cream which worked extremely well - unfortunately though at $80 a tub, it's not really sustainable for me.
I've tried both a dry skin ointment and a few balms on the dry patches but these either do absolutely nothing or seem to make them worse. I haven't tried Lucas pawpaw specifically though so I might give that a go. Thanks for the advice!
Hi, Claudia, I do not know about your age. But anti-ageing creams are usually richer and more moisturising. I started using anti-ageing cream in my early 30's, even though my skin is not exactly "mature".
