Expensive skin care - worth it or not
Expensive skin care - worth it or not
I love Olay, Neutrogena and Cetaphil. Some of my friends are convinced once you reach a certain age, and I have, that unless you don't have the money you should use more expensive skin care. The product line I keep hearing about, including in doctor's offices is Obagi as well as Cosmedix. I'll pay the price if it is truly worth it, so what do you professional beauty mavens think? My dermatologist is a fan of NeoStrata BUT says I need not feel compelled? Curious what you 40+ women are using? Avene? Olay? NeoStrata? La Roche Posay? (all available from the pharmacy!) Or do you pay more for Obagi, Cosmedix, DNA, Skin Medica, Aspect, etc. ? Love to hear from you all, even you enviable youngsters in your twenties, which funny enough is when I had the most disposable income, ah the days of no mortgages! I've always thought that the best skin comes from a healthy life, lots of smiling, eating well and proper sun care. Anything topical like moisturisers and serums are limited in their efficacy and only surgery or injectables, etc., can achieve dramatic results.

Regular buyer for a long time.
Im stuck buying this product literally. I used it when my children were babies and now there a bit older and understand they no bath, cream, then bed. No cream = no bed for 3 very angry toddlers.
Smooth cream that doesn’t feel too heavy
This moisturiser has a lovely smooth texture and glides onto my skin beautifully. I found it left my skin feeling soft and supple and it also wears well under makeup.
Goodness in a Jar
After more than a week of using Pro X by Olay Anti Aging Wrinkle Smoothing Cream I can really say that the I ❤️ the product;

It depends on the person's skin type , and suitability and as far as I am concerned you should pay for what you can afford that SUITS your skin . I don't believe you need to stick to one brand at all because a moisturiser that suits may not suit with their cleansers ( as an example ) . I do believe in a good nightcream ( one with nutrients etc ) because you are lying in bed for 7-10 hrs exposed soaking up good ingredients . So if you were to splurge then go for a really good night cream . Also minimal fragrance is the best for me on my face and body , as I cannot tolerate high perfumed products. My doctor ( who is a Christian ) says believe in God , live a daily happy life combined with a lots of natural fruit/vegs in a balanced diet and stop worrying over mundane matters is her motto ! AMEN
Hi Harmony Queen (great screen name BTW!) Yes, of course what's right for one person is not for another, all about age, skin type, lifestyle, etc. And, as said, I believe what's most important is being a happy person, smiling a lot, eating well, exercise, proper sun care and being mindful of nasties like smoking, alcohol and drugs. That said, wanted feedback as to whether members of this great forum think the pricier products like Obagi or Cosmedix are worth more than Olay, etc. as a number of my friends do, I really don't but was looking for feedback from an educated arena as I think questioning your position on most things from time to time is a good thing. I appreciate your reply. Cheers.
Thank you and Welcome Juliee :)
HQ, your doc gave the best ever advice possible! Glad to hear that we still have some sane and smart doctors out there!
Love your doc motto Harmony Queen
I believe expensive is not always better. Spending more does not guarantee better skin. Spending less does not hurt sometimes.
Julieellenv You can find many good skincare products that do not cost the earth. I have recommended dozens in the past.
Personally, I do not just look at brands & their marketing hocus pocus. I look at ingredients & reviews.
Thank you Preciousia , some advice given really can simply be deceiving on image alone .
Harmony Queen You share the best advice always.
I have spent thousands on my skin before i dare say that Expensive isn't always better. Have blogged about it several times as this question does get asked in various forms on the forum. http://loveneedwant.wixsite.com/blog/blog/tag/expensive
Some people spend money they don't have, on things they do not need (but want) to impress people they don't like.
"Spending less doesn't hurt your skin, and spending more doesn't necessarily help it." Paula Begoun
...in your case from the past , getting no value for your skin or money Preciousia .

Value is a different topic altogether.
Value is when dollars spent translate to benefits received. And you'll find the more you spend the benefits received may increase but not by the same proportion of the dollars.
For example a $10 cream vs $1000 cream. is the $1000 cream 100x better as $1000 is 100x more than $10. The answer you'll find is always No. Perhaps 10% better at best.
Yes so true !
Like that economic law of diminishing returns. :P
I love this!!
Hi Precious, thanks for your reply. I do not think expensive is best, again my go to skin care is Olay, specially Olay complete for sensitive skin with SPF that I usually get on sale at Chemist Warehouse for $10, but I thought why not ask in a forum that I respect, where there are a lot of knowledgeable people whose opinions I value hearing if I should reconsider. :-)
Julieellenv Welcome to the forum.
it's hard to decipher all the mambo jumbo in skincare... it truly isn't easy.
i think the best i have done is spend money on education, books to understand more how to decipher the $$$$ and the $. There are plenty of free materials available too. So far, the money spent on books have definitely helped me translate to savings in skincare.
i have recommended this before and will again, one good place to start is http://www.smartskincare.com/ run by medical researcher Dr Todorov. He is fair, unbiased and does not endorse any brand at all. I have purchased his e-books and can't recommend them enough.
I've not used Olay and am not a fan of the silicones and parabens in their formulaes... Paula Begoun have given them good reviews for their budget options. They have some higher priced product in their range. Olay get rave reviews for niacinamide (Vitamin B3) they include in their products. Niacinamide is a must have ingredient for me, it's easily found in other products and it's not an expensive ingredient to include either.
Well said, presciousia. There's certainly a lot of that "mambo jumbo" that turns into that $$$. So many products and brands use the same ingredients and I personally believe lower priced products are just as effective. Marketing that claims to provide you a more "luxe" image and lifestyle gets you and so does society's view on "high end" products. Education is key.
I agree
a similar thread perhaps you could read is this:
she asked whether drugstore brands compare to luxury brands.

Thanks. I love reading up on these topics. An informed decision is best. And thanks for the warm welcome.
It definitely depends so much on the individual and their skin as well as budget. Very often something more expensive will last longer but not always. I've got incredibly sensitive skin and had reactions to NeoStrata. I tend to think, especially for someone with sensitive skin, that when you find something that works for you, you stick to it.
I'm still loving the philosophy miracle night worker, which I was fortunate enough to trial and then win!!! but others had huge problems with this. I love the Springfield's range - the essential oil people - and their serum is the best I've ever tried and believe me, I've tried more than a few.
Welcome to the forums, Julieellenv.
Thank you! I'm a fan of Aspect and ASAP, also Dermalogica - but find Olay, Neutrogena and Cetaphil offer wonderful products as well. Agree - about finding what works for me best as everyone's skin and needs different! Cheers.
Most of the time, no. There are some very inexpensive brands that perform as well and help you look just as gorgeous as you would using expensive products. I believe nothing makes you more beautiful than a good night's sleep and a smile.
Having said that... some brands are just expensive but some brands charge more because of the higher costs of ingredients/ quality of ingredient which is fair. As i DIY a little, i have access to see the costs of ingredients and sometimes and appalled at the price many companies' are asking.
similar to baking a cake and you can compare the costs of a chiffon cake vs cheese cake :P
Welcome to the forum julieellenv. Great forum topic. I agree with what everyone says too, it's all about the inside as well. Exercise good diet happiness. I'll answer this from my perspective. I don't believe that expensive is better. I agree with preciousia, sometimes more expensive is just because of the higher quality ingredients. Personally I spend a range of prices but I tend to look at ingredients first. I personally enjoy trying new products and that's just something I do and enjoy. That being said if it came to me being or having to choose between good food and vegetables for example over serum I'd choose healthy food etc. Some of the best products I've used are cheaper and work well. I think ingredients make a difference not the brand name or product price. For example retin a is one of the best ingredients ever and for a script is no more than 30. If your cheaper skin care is working, I'd stick with that. Nothing else matters.
It's ironic that Paula says that when her products are now super expensive.
Hi julieellenv: I'm a tight @Я$€, I usually go for bargain products, or stuff on sale.
Ha ha I love this misfortune, total tight #***#, good for you.
