I swear I can smell my mascara - does it go off?
Sure does. Mascara should be binned after 6 months. Any time a product starts to smell weird, don't keep using it. If you look at the little symbol on the products of an open jar and a number, that means how many months you can keep using it after opening.
Bh recently had this article: "The Beauty Product Expiration Dates You Need To Know", found here:
I'm not prone to sensitive skin, so I keep using products until they run out, unless they start to smell or look funny.
Absolutely the way to go
It does go off; however, I think creamier products like liquid foundations, cream eyeshadows, mascaras etc do go off faster than powder products. If it smells weird, has separated or generally looks funky, throw it out!
I confess the only thing I throw out on the regular is mascara, although even then I'll use it for at least 6 months before I throw it (although I have kept them for a bit longer before...no longer than 9 months though).
I am so guilty of not disposing of products when I should. I prefer to use them until they run out, otherwise I feel like I'm just throwing money away.
That being said, yes, most products do have an 'expiry'. I definitely make sure to throw away products if they develop a funny smell or if they start looking a bit funky. I think in particular, be wary of eye makeup.
Yes it does, you need to buy a new one especially when it comes to mascara.
I agree I keep products until they are finished too unless they have been open for ages. But if something smells definitely throw it out.
If it starts smelling different or the consistency or colour changes or generally looks different that’s when you know to get rid of it.
yes make sure to clean out all your beauty products every 6 months its not good to use out of date products!
Thank you everyone... looks like I off to buy some new mascara!
Possibly controversial but I'm big on 'wing it'. I hate rules about throwing out and replacing expensive products.
If it looks, smells or feels off, I bin it. Otherwise I keep it. It doesn't sound nice but that's the honest truth... and it's never caused me any problems.
As the others have said, in this case it's definitely a sign it needs replacing! But just wanted to speak out for all my other beauties who just don't follow the "this long" rules either - you're not alone!
I’m exactly the same. I will use a product unless it smells or looks off, and that’s only happened rarely with products I’d forgotten about. I’ve never thrown out a mascara before it’s been finished, I don’t care if it’s over 6 months old. There are some products I have used years after they were first opened and I’ve never had any issues.
Cynically, I think some of these recommendations are a bit of a marketing ploy to make you think you need to throw your products out and buy new ones.
I agree NellAdams.
Yes, mascara should be thrown out after a month or two.
It absolutely does, and yet I still have very old makeup that I’ve been hanging on to even though I hardly use it... oops
I would bin it if it smells odd. My kit mascaras usually do not last for 3 + months anyway, but personal mascaras I would use for about 6 months.
Yes just like food has an expiry date so does our makeup. That's why I love products with a great designed to secure the product properly.
It expires when it's empty hahaha. For real though, the little icon with the number is how long. Macaras and eyeliners are roughly 6 months, powders can be 1-2 years (but you can use rubbing alcohol to keep them more sanitary) and can last a lot longer. Foundations and concealers depend on the applicator.
Basically anything where the applicator goes straight onto your face is gonna need to be thrown out in a shorter timeframe because bacteria will start to grow and can cause infections. Mascaras are the most important to adhere to though.
I’m a bit divided with this product, I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. When I think of gentle exfoliation, I imagine a very fine grit. This is the opposite.
It was perfect timing to try sunscreens as we come into the warmer weather, so I was really excited to test this sunscreen as part of a Trial Team.
I really enjoyed trialling this serum over the last few weeks and have already noticed an improvement in my skin’s tone, texture and hydration.
