To all Beauty Heaven Members October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Think Pink!
Please remember to have your Mammogram and Ultrasound and check your Breasts.
Always better to be Safe than Sorry.
Regards ~ Margi59
Thanks for the reminder Margi59
I get my breasts screened every two years! It's important because IF you've got any kind of cancer, it's always best to find it as early as possible!
Breastscreen is FREE for all women over the age of 50. You can book your appointment online, and they will send you a reminder every two years. I just had it done for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I was very nervous about the whole procedure, but it was painless and nothing to worry about.
My (paternal) Aunty was only 54 when she had breast cancer. Thankfully they caught it early and she was fine.
I found out that it's actually free when you're 40, but their advertising only targets those over 50. I was in my 40s when I found this out, so I've been having free mammograms since I was 43.
You're right, mis8. I started at age 40 and I've now had 13 mammograms done. I can never work out why they advertise from age 50 because the sooner anything is detected the sooner it can be treated. There must be thousands of women missing out on free breast screening because they aren't aware they are eligible.
EXACTLY! I've mentioned it on this forum quite a few times, too. I tell everyone I know to get one. Personally, I think it's worse than a pap smear, but it might save my life, so I do it!
Agreed Breastscreen is Free I have a mammogram and ultrasound once every year because of my family history having my Mother, Sister and Aunties have had breast cancer I also have the Brca2 gene as well thankfully so far I have only had cysts and one biopsy done.
Anyone any age can get a mammogram and ultrasound done through their Doctor, if they are younger than the age group specified. Especially if they have suspect lumps in their breasts.
It always best to catch it early.
I agree wholeheartedly, Margi59. I have been having a mammogram and ultrasound every year since I was in my mid twenties. I also come from a family where 4 of my 5 sisters have had breast cancer as well as my maternal grandmother.
Even being this vigilant I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of January 2018 before my yearly checkup. I was 62 at the time. The treatment is very demanding but thankfully I am good at the moment.
I personally feel that 50 is way too late to start having mammograms.
If you suspect something is not right DON'T LEAVE IT, HAVE IT CHECKED .
Marclaire I have a mammogram and ultrasound every year sometimes I feel like I shouldn't bother at times especially when my mammogram and ultrasound are clear.
But You are so right it is better to remain vigilant. So sorry that you have had breast cancer! So glad that everything is alright for you at the moment.
I will keep getting them done even if I don't have anything found, because you never know if there could be a lump one day.
Wishing You a Lovely Long Weekend!
The only way is to be vigilant as early detection is what really helped me. Especially as you, like me, also have cancer in your immediate family.
Keep up the good work and thank you for your kind wishes .
I had no family history or suspected lumps when I started getting regular mammograms. I believe in getting all of my pokes & prods & scans - then I relax for 2 years. No matter what you might have, early detection gives you the best chance!
Yes Mis8 you need to be checked regularly and be conscious of any changes that may occur and have them looked at asap.
50 is way too late to start having mammograms.
Very good and close friend had a lump at 45 - breast cancer and lump removed. 2 years later another lump (same side) with breast removed and chemo and radiotherapy. 10 years on, she still lives with a "dark cloud hanging over her" (her words) and constantly worries with every ache or pain. Last week has seen her undergo brain scans (due to symptoms last few weeks), scan on pancreas with heart tests to come - putting her through hell.
I agree that 50 is too late to start having mammograms and unfortunately your friend's experience with breast cancer, although very sad, is not uncommon.
Having had breast cancer and still being in contact with women undergoing various stages of treatment, I am only just realising how complex a disease cancer is and that the doctors are also on a huge learning curve.
Needless to say, cancer is a very scary disease and having good friends and family around at this very challenging period in your life makes a big difference.
Have never had one and probably should...
I've heard that your breast tissue is too dense when you are aged under 50 and they can't do a good screening. Is that true?
No it isn't True Lisa359 I have very dense breast tissue and that is why you usually require both the Mammogram and Ultrasound Scans just to make sure. Even if you do have very dense breast tissue, you can feel if you have larger lumps.
Always get yourself checked Out.
I was told the same! I'm only 35 and have very dense breasts due to being small and have cysts, I've asked about the mammogram several times but they keep saying wait until I'm older that ultrasound is best for me... My sister is 37 and she gets mammograms though but lives in NZ.
My mother passed away from breast cancer at 35 very young (back in the 90's not many options around) so I am very conscious and paranoid about it! I get breast/pelvic ultrasound alternating yearly as apparently they are linked.
That must have been such a hard time for you losing your mum at a young age. Yes you must be vigilant.
Thank you for the reminder!!!
I started having mammograms at 40 (my grandmother had breast cancer at age 90! but GP advised I start then and other grandmother died from ovarian cancer at 58 - age I now am) and regularly having every 2 years.
I did have an ultrasound 5 years ago after seeing a specialist (abnormal breastscreen but all ok) and she advised I shouldn’t rely on mammograms alone. Had an additional mammogram (6 mths after last breastscreen) and ultrasound (due to a lump - but ok) and the technician told me I had dense breast tissue ie no fat! and should always have an ultrasound as well as a breastscreen.
I’m 51. I had my first Breastscreen a few weeks ago. I just got a letter to say it’s all clear. Yay! They’ll send me a reminder to have another one in 2 years.
Rose_P such Wonderful News glad that everything was Ok. Have a Lovely Weekend.
Great news Rose! And good for you having it done and now you can feel relief.
They Will send you a reminder in 2 years - and they will not leave you alone until you book that appointment - believe me!
I'm not due for my next "breastscreen" until February 2020, but I had to have one in August last year (privately done and not through breastscreen) and I called them to let them know my next one should now be 2 years from that one. They told me I can have the breastscreen in one year and one day from that one - and they would send me a reminder.
I think I've had 2 postal reminders, 2 phone messages and 2 txt messages in the last 6 weeks - Which is a Good Thing!
I will get around to booking my next appointment - have a couple of other medical tests to book and try and do them on the one day - easier to take a full day off work than be leaving early or starting late on a few occasions.
I have never tried a lip mask before so thought I would give this a shot.
The mask is gold and quite well priced at $12 for 4 masks.
